Everything in our Tuffman line of sorting system products is currently being offered at 5% off the advertised price if purchased by the end of the month (Friday, November 30th, 2012). The Tuffman line includes sorting stations in a variety of sizes, trommel screens, crossbelt magnets and conveyors. These products work together to form complete sorting systems and are perfect for anyone starting up a new material recovery facility (MRF), or wishing to expand or improve an existing facility. An MRF is a plant that receives, separates and prepares recyclable materials for end-user manufacturers. Most commonly, an MRF will consist of a single stream of material to be sorted. The materials travel on a conveying system manned by workers known as pickers who are each assigned to pick a different type of material off the line, thus separating waste from recyclables and commingled recyclables into groups of plastic, aluminum, glass, paper, etc. With all of the money that can be saved by using this type of facility, MRFs are popping up nationwide. Only 70 plants existed in 2001, a number has more than doubled in the past 10 years. All Tuffman products can be custom made to meet any size or application needs and come with a one year warranty.

Sorting Stations

Our Tuffman line of sorting stations offers a variety of sizes, including a 6-Man, 8-Man and 12-Man, as well as two “mini” models of 3-Man and 4-Man. The larger sizes are perfect for construction and demolition, and municipal solid waste recycling, while the “mini” models are more suited for plastics, papers and other light recyclables. Sorting stations are available in both stationary and portable models.

All models come equipped with emergency shutoffs, stairs, walkways and sorting chutes. Productivity options such as crossbelt magnets, pre-screening attachments are offered for stationary models and break-away catwalks, skid mounting for added stability and hydraulic drive power are offered for portable. Tuffman sorting stations are powered by variable speed controls and have individual ladders for each station. If you want to increase efficiency and productivity, try our portable sorting station which comes mounted on a single axle trailer, allowing you to shorten the distance from the waste to the processing facility.

Trommel Screens

Tuffman manufactures trommel screens in stationary, portable and bag breaker [watch demo video] designs. Models include the Tuffman Model 415 Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 618 Stationary Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 722 Stationary Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 722-P Portable Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 722 Bag Breaker Trommel, the Tuffman Model 822 Stationary Trommel Screen and the Tuffman Model 830 Stationary Trommel Screen.

Trommel screens are useful for any type of sifting work. As the screened cylinder rotates, it separates material by size, letting the smaller pieces pass through the openings while keeping the larger pieces inside. Trommels are useful in a variety of jobs, including compost production and the separation of sand/gravel, lumber mill by-products and municipal solid waste (MSW). The screens separate the biodegradable fraction of mixed MSW, making them a smart and convenient addition to any MRF.

Trommel screens are also useful in excavation shifting. They can separate the debris into top soil to be sold to farms, nurseries and site-work, and rock that can be cleaned and used for aggregates and landscaping. This way, the contractor can resell their waste instead of having to pay for transportation and disposal of the material.

Magnets

The Tuffman series offers 24 inch, 30 inch, 36 inch, 48 inch and 60 inch sizes. All magnets are powered by a 3/4-hp, 220/480 V, 3-phase electric motor. Magnets are Ideal for recycling operations and widely used in the sorting of co-mingle and separating ferrous and nonferrous metals.

Landfill gas to energy efforts are one of the leading forms of creating renewable, or “green” energy. As the organic waste products, such as food scraps and yard waste, decompose in the landfill, they naturally emit methane gas along with a variety of other gases. Once purified, this gas can be used as an energy source. In order to be reusable, the gas generated from landfills must be collected and broken down.

Commonly, this is done through the use of an adsorption unit, such as the QuestAir (Xebec) Pressure Swing Adsorption Unit. This unit is currently set up to absorb all gasses found in biogas stream except methane, thus purifying the methane by separating it from the gas stream. The adsorbent packing in the unit will remove carbon dioxide from biogas to increase the methane purity and improve quality similar to natural gas.

The gas stream emitted from the landfill is directly routed into the adsorption unit that uses carbon beds to absorb all of the carbon in the gas stream. Once saturated, these carbon beds can either be replaced or regenerated. If the user chooses regeneration, the gas leaving the regenerating carbon bed will still contain trace amounts of the other gases from the landfill gas stream; these gases will be sent through a thermal oxidizer where the undesired gasses will be incinerated. This method is most practical at smaller landfills because of the rate at which the landfill gas would saturate the carbon beds at a large landfill would be too quick for this method to be efficient.

After the gas has been properly processed through the adsorption unit, it can be directly used to generate electricity in homes, or it can be piped offsite to nearby manufacturing plants or industrial consumers to use as an alternative fuel source such as for heating/cooling at a school, government building or other public facility. 75% of the gas generated from a landfill can be used and sold as green energy if one simply has the proper harnessing and purification equipment for the job.

The QuestAir (Xebec) Pressure Swing Adsorption Unit is a skid-mounted, high-efficiency methane purification unit complete with packing, rapid cycle valves and five no high pressure (80-450 PSIG) vessels with packing currently configured for the separation of carbon dioxide from biogas to increase the methane (CH4) content. The unit measures 34 1/2′ long x 12 1/2′ wide x 13 1/2′ high. The system uses an integrated rotary valve technology in lieu of conventional solenoid-actuated valves, increasing throughput and will process up to 4,000 cfm.

Beyond use as a landfill gas cleaning unit, this unit’s operational capabilities and purpose make it a highly sought out item in a variety of fields including oil companies, gas companies, municipalities, waste recyclers (with biogas), renewable energy companies, chemical process plants, fertilizer manufacturers and soil remediation companies wanting to purify and reuse the gas from the process. WWR currently has two units available. These units have never been used and are currently being offered at a steal of $600,000 below market value.

The primary use of a rotary dryer is to reduce the moisture content in a variety of materials. They are excellent for drying sawdust, wood shavings, hay, livestock renderings, by-products used for animal feed, paper, municipal solid waste, salt and sludge. Rotary dryers are a key piece of equipment in soil remediation. The rotating drum heats the soil to a temperature high enough to vaporize the contaminants, but not so high that the soil is incinerated.

With the quick and efficient drying process they provide, rotary dryers are used for a variety of applications beyond soil remediation. They are used in the food processing industry to dry grains, citrus and potato by-products, spices and nuts; in the metal and mining industries to dry a variety of metal concentrates and minerals such as aluminum, coal, limestone and fluorescent lamp powder; and in the ceramic and chemical industries to dry silica and beach sand, ceramic powders and synthetic resins.

As the dryer rotates, the material is lifted by a series of fins called flights that line the inner walls of the drum. As the material rolls back down off the flights, it passes through a stream of hot gas and falls to the bottom of the dryer. This process continues until the material is thoroughly dried. Dryers are offered in both direct and indirect heated models. When a burner is used, making up the gas stream of both air and combustion gases, it is considered direct heat. When the gas stream is heated through a different mean and no combustion gases enter the dryer, it is an indirect heated model. Indirect heated models are useful when product contamination is a concern.

Some units include a cyclone that acts as an air pollution control device, collecting and filtering the material and carrying it to the dryer’s discharge system. In this case, the material is passed from the drum into the cyclone before it is discharged. Use of a cyclone with a dryer is common when a dryer is being used for soil remediation jobs because it separates the soil from the toxins that were vaporized during the drying process. This way, the newly-cleaned soil is released, but the toxic vapors are captured and passed into an oxidizer that breaks them down and restores them to CO2 and H2O so they can be admitted into the atmosphere, pollutant-free.

This industrial shredder provides an economical solution to the problem of efficiently disposing of non-compactable waste, taking these items down to a significantly reduced volume to be more efficiently transported for recycling or disposal. The unique shredding table is made of twin shafts equipped with ripper cutters. The shafts allow abrasive material such as soil, gravel and metal fragments to fall through the cutting table without effecting performance or damaging the cutter teeth. Traditional shredders have no gap between the ripper cutters, so often times this material wears the cutters down, drastically reducing ripper blade life and production efficiency.

The shredder is operated through a fully-automated shredding process. The powerful shafts can be set to rotate at either 32 rpm or 16 rpm and automatically adjust to meet the load requirements. The two shafts operate independently of one another, allowing one to reverse while the other moves forward. This self-contained recycling and waste reduction shredder/ grinder is mounted on a triple-axle trailer that meets all regulations for legal highway transportation.

As more and more knowledge comes to light on the damaging environmental effects of improperly discarding electronics, politicians and government agencies are stepping to create regulations for how the material is handled. Throwing old electronics in the trash so that they end up landfilled is a safety hazard. Most electronics contain toxic materials that can cause environmental problems if not discarded of properly. As the first step in the e-cycling process, most items are manually dismantled. Those that can’t be efficiently dismantled manually are put through a shredder, such as the Rome Mawler Stomas so that the pieces of whole e-scrap and dismantled parts are taken down to scraps less than two inches in diameter. When it comes to e-waste, recycling is extremely significant because of the valuable material that can be recovered from used electronics, reducing the need to mine into the earth for new raw materials.

The latest scrap steel report, the 2010 report, was released by the Steel Recycling Institute earlier this year, showing an 88% steel recycling rate. Around 65% of a junked car is steel, with the other 35% made up of other metals, glass, rubber and upholstery. ecycling this metal uses up around 75% less energy than making new steel. Buying recycled steel is cheaper too because new ore does not have to be mined to produce it. With all steel today made up of at least 25% recycled steel, and the number of products made of solely recycled steel increasing, recycling cars has become a vital link in the world’s industrial infrastructure. This scrap steel supply and demand stabilization is indicative of the trend going on in overall scrap metal supply and demand. As the economy continues to stabilize, scrap metal recyclers grow and thrive. If this trend stays on track, the United States can expect to experience a growth in the scrap market industry as more and more scrap metal processors and recyclers step into this profitable field.

Another growing industry that calls for shredding is wood waste recycling. The limbs are inserted into the hopper and pass through the collar and through the chipping blades. The chips exit through a chute and are typically one to two inches across. Depending on the use of the wood chips, the process either stops here and the chips are used as mulch in some sort of ground cover, or they are sent through a digester for papermaking. With the range of recycled products made from wood waste spanning from shoreline erosion prevention products to fish and bird habitats to reusable mulch for trails, landscape, gardening and playgrounds, the wood recycling industry is on a lucrative rise.

As more and more states prohibit the disposal of whole tires into landfills, demand for tire shredders has been on the rise, and the Rome Mawler is equipped to handle even the largest passenger and truck tires. Because of the wide array of products being made from recycled tires, there is high profit in tire shredding and recycling. Recycled tires are used to produce anything from rubberized mulch, asphalt and sidewalks to office supplies and interior flooring and are used in a variety of industries from erosion control to landscaping. The rubber is taken down to various crumb sizes, used to produce different products, depending on the size. Smaller particles are used for a variety of industrial, athletic field, paving and landscaping applications, while larger pieces are used in civil engineering, as a substitute for stone aggregates or as fuel to power kilns, mills and power plants. With the variety and significance of uses of recycled tires, there is a lot of money to be made in the tire recycling industry.

Shredders are size reduction machines that can be used for a wide array of applications. This model is specialized for cardboard, paper and paper product shredding. A shredder works by using three methods to reduce material to a smaller size: shearing, tearing and fracturing. Shearing is the actual cutting of the material. The cutting edges work against one another to slice the material, so the sharper the blades are, the more efficient the machine operates. Tearing involves pulling the material with such force that it rips apart. This technique works best on soft materials, such as papers and cardboard. Fracturing happens when hard or brittle materials are broken or shattered and usually occurs when cutters are not sharp or are loose. All three techniques work together to reduce the size of the material while the shredder is operating, however, shearing is the most efficient technique, making blade maintenance an important aspect of shredder upkeep. This paper shredder mainly uses shearing and tearing to reduce the paper products into strips because soft, flexible paper products do not fracture the way hard, rigid material does.

With the large volume of confidential documents accumulated at companies, owning a reliable paper shredder is important. The longer private financial information, health records and personnel records are kept around, the more of a chance the company stands that someone will see and read these materials. An industrial paper shredder is the perfect solution to this problem. It shreds large quantities of documents in a short amount of time. Using your own paper shredder eliminates the need for expensive shredding services and pickup fees and gives you the confidence of knowing that your documents have been immediately destroyed and were not seen by any outside parties.

Along with the security benefits this machine provides, it is also environmentally friendly. Shredding paper down to a consistent and small enough size to be re-processed into new material is one of the first steps in recycling. Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than paper made from raw materials and each ton recycled saves 4000 kW of electricity that would be spent creating paper from new products. 90% of paper pulp in existence today is made out of wood and paper production accounts for 35% of felled trees. Currently, recyclable paper products make up around 35% of municipal solid waste sent to landfills. Recycling this paper for reuse rather than landfilling it reduces the environmental impact on trees to create new paper products and saves valuable space in landfills for items that cannot be recycled. Recycling one ton of newsprint paper saves one ton of wood and recycling 1 ton of printing or copier paper saves two tons of wood. Most often, recycled paper is used to produce molded pulp used in packaging, but can also be recycled into a variety of new paper products.

Portec tumble grinders are used to grind bulky debris, especially wood waste, including stumps, railroad ties, branches and green waste. Prior to grinding, the wood waste is passed through a 200 square foot screening area to remove rocks, dirt, sand and other contaminants. The tumble tub is a screened cylinder inclined at a 30 degree angle. The cylinder rotates at the wood debris is passed through, knocking dirt and rocks loose and dropping them out through the screen openings, while the large wood pieces are maintained in the screen and passed into the grinder. Removing the abrasive material such as soil, gravel and metal fragments prior to grinding allows the wood waste to be efficiently shredded without effecting performance or damaging the grinding mechanisms. Traditional grinders do not have this pre-screening chamber, so often times this material wears down the grinding hammers, drastically reducing the equipment’s lifespan and production efficiency.

From the tumbler, the material is passed into the grinding chamber to be reduced to smaller shreds. The grinding tub is equipped with a hammermill with swinging hammers that do the grinding work. Hammermills are grinding machines used to shred or crush aggregate material into smaller pieces. Material is passed through a wide feed hopper, falling into the grinding chamber. The grinding chamber contains a rotating hammer rotor with swinging hammers that crush the material and drive it through a screen, thus using impact grinding to reduce the material into smaller scraps.

Portec tumble grinders are equipped with two different discharge conveyors, one for the screened product and one for the ground product. As their name implies, their primary purpose of a conveyor is to convey material from one area to another in a quick and easy manner. The use of a conveyor reduces manual labor, because the conveyor system does the moving work for you. The ground wood material travels up the conveyor and out through a shoot to be dumped directly onto a dump truck or trailer. The conveyors have the ability to raise, lower and extend.

The Portec Model 1042 Tumble Grinder is powered by a 410 hp, Cat 3408 8-cylinder diesel engine. The unit has a grinding capacity of 200 tons per hour. The grinder comes mounted on 6 wheels with air brakes and controls. This machine is quick to set up and easy to use, requiring only ten minutes to get ready and running. With only 589 hours of previous use, the tumble grinder is in great condition. With the range of recycled products made from wood waste spanning from shoreline erosion prevention products to fish and bird habitats to reusable mulch for trails, landscape, gardening and playgrounds, the wood recycling industry is on a lucrative rise, making the purchase of a grinder more cost-effective than ever.

The Metso Holo-Flite Quadruple Processor is an indirect heat exchanger for heating, cooling and drying bulk solids, filter cakes, paste or sludge. Individual particles are heated or cooled as they come in contact with the surfaces of the hollow flights, shaft and trough. There is no contamination of the product, as the material being processed does not come in contact with the heat transfer material. The product is continuously conveyed in axial direction by rotating screw flights along a jacketed trough, and the heat transfer fluid is normally water, steam or thermal oil. The processor uses indirect heat exchange, providing excellent product temperature control. The heat transfer is also recycled, minimizing heat losses and increasing efficiency.

This Holo-Flite dryer/ cooler is designed for processing various types of contaminated soil, removing and separating from contaminates such as oil, gasoline, VOCs, drying alumina, carbon black, sodium chloride, plastics, pesticides and potassium chloride. It can also be used to heat limestone filler, petroleum coke, molybdenum and fine coal. It is used for cooling, drying and heating a variety of materials in the chemical processing and industrial power industries. It is also commonly used in mineral processing and drying and in the food processing and environmental industries.

Metso Holo-Flite processors are able to achieve a wide range of temperatures through their unique twin-pad design. This setup accommodates extreme expansion and contraction variation and allows the processor to operate successfully up to 900 degrees F. Slow speeds and gentle mixing minimize particle degradation and agitation. This motion provides continuous operation and can work with varying flow. The device is simple to control, consumes little energy and allows exact temperature and moisture control. Metso has more half a century of experience in designing and manufacturing of indirect heat exchanger systems, and the Holo-Flite thermal processor is recognized for its long lifespan and efficient output.

The unique screw construction is what differentiates the Holo-Flite processor from others on the market. Holo-Flite processors are the only machines with flights welded to an outer twin pad wrap, allowing them to expand and contract independently of the steampipe. The rotary joint allows screws to rotate while providing a seal to stationary piping. The siphon tube allows inlet and outlet heat transfer through the end of the screw. A front flight conveys material continuously through the processor, while a back flight allows the heat transfer medium to circulate. The block plate prevents the inlet and outlet heat transfer agents from mixing.

This Tuffman 8-Man HD-P Portable Sorting Station comes equipped with emergency shutoffs, stairs, walkways and sorting chutes. Available productivity options include break-away catwalks, skid mounting for added stability and hydraulic drive power. Tuffman sorting stations are powered by variable speed controls and have individual ladders for each station. This portable sorting station comes mounted on a single-axle trailer which increases efficiency and productivity by allowing you to shorten the distance from the waste to the processing facility. The 8-Man size is perfect for construction and demolition, and municipal solid waste recycling. The Tuffman products are specifically designed for those wanting to start up a new material recovery facility (MRF), or expand or improve an existing facility.

An MRF is a plant that receives, separates and prepares recyclable materials for end-user manufacturers. A clean MRF only accepts commingled materials that have already been separated from municipal waste, while a dirty MRF accepts a mix of recyclables and waste. Once the material has been sorted to specifications, it is ready to be baled, shredded, crushed or compacted in preparation for shipping. Condensing the material this way saves space, thus reducing shipping and storing costs, financially benefiting both the sorting facility and the end-user manufacturers.

This sorting station is 32’ long x 42” wide with eight sorting chutes (four on each side). It comes equipped with an infeed hopper and 42” conveyor powered by a 10 hp variable speed motor.

Worldwide Recycling Equipment Sales, LLC offers the option to custom build any sized sorting station to best suit any jobsite or application requirements. All Tuffman products are made using new materials and come with a one-year warranty.

Pleased with the output of their customized Tuffman sorting system, Greenstar Recycling in Malta (the Mediterranean island just off the coast of Italy) put together a video highlighting the benefits provided through the use of the system for residential recycling.

Greenstar is a residential recycling facility with services for paper, cardboard and plastic recycling. They also provide secure document shredding as well as shredding of non-paper items such as hard drives and data disks. They strive to reduce air pollution and energy use through their recycling program. The basis of their program is backed by facts, such as the knowledge that recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than paper made from raw materials and each ton recycled saves 4000 kW of electricity. Greenstar operates under the notion that the energy saved by recycling daily household items such as paper, metal cans and plastic rather than producing new could be better spent elsewhere. Recycling these items also frees up space in landfills that can be devoted to items that are not recyclable. In fact, plastics are not biodegradable and can take up to 500 years to decompose.

The Greenstar Recycling facility receives, separates and prepares recyclable materials for end-user manufacturers. The sorting system consists of a single stream of combined papers, plastics, cans and other residential recyclable. The materials travel on a conveying system manned by workers known as pickers who are each assigned to pick a different type of material off the line, thus separating waste from recyclables and commingled recyclables into groups of plastic, aluminum, glass, paper, etc. Once the material has been sorted to specifications, it is ready to be baled, shredded, crushed or granulated in preparation for shipping and processing into new materials. Metals can be reused as new metal products, in fact, all steel currently on the market is made up of at least 25% recycled metal and the number of products made of solely recycled steel increasing. Recycled plastics are formed into new plastic products such as plastic tables and chairs, polar fleece, carpeting, picnic tables, bottles, fences, floor tiles and pens.

Developers for the Greenstar facility required a sorting system that could accommodate eight pickers and separate ferrous from non-ferrous metals. The sorting system was purchased by Greenstar Recycling as original equipment for their newly-built facility. Currently the system allows Greenstar to handle the more than 7,000 tons they recycle every year. The sorting system served as a perfect launch-pad to get Greenstar established in the market and they only plan to grow and develop from here, anticipating further Tuffman equipment needs within the year.

This sorting system purchase included an 8-Man Sorting Station, a 32’ long x 42” wide Infeed Conveyor, a CBS 48 Crossbelt Magnet, and a 10’ long x 36” wide UHWM Lined Chute. As with all Tuffman products, this system was fully developed new in-house and was custom made to meet the customer’s application needs. This entire system was fully designed and manufactured at our facility and comes with a one-year warranty on all products.
