Sorting Stations

Our Tuffman line of sorting stations offers a variety of sizes, including a 6-Man, 8-Man and 12-Man, as well as two “mini” models of 3-Man and 4-Man. The larger sizes are perfect for construction and demolition, and municipal solid waste recycling, while the “mini” models are more suited for plastics, papers and other light recyclables. Sorting stations are available in both stationary and portable models.

All models come equipped with emergency shutoffs, stairs, walkways and sorting chutes. Productivity options such as crossbelt magnets, pre-screening attachments are offered for stationary models and break-away catwalks, skid mounting for added stability and hydraulic drive power are offered for portable. Trommel Screens

Tuffman manufactures trommel screens in stationary, portable and bag breaker [watch demo video] designs. Models include the Tuffman Model 415 Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 618 Stationary Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 722 Stationary Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 722-P Portable Trommel Screen, the Tuffman Model 722 Bag Breaker Trommel, the Tuffman Model 822 Stationary Trommel Screen and the Tuffman Model 830 Stationary Trommel Screen.

Trommel screens are useful for any type of sifting work. As the screened cylinder rotates, it separates material by size, letting the smaller pieces pass through the openings while keeping the larger pieces inside. Trommels are useful in a variety of jobs, including compost production and the separation of sand/gravel, lumber mill by-products and municipal solid waste (MSW). The screens separate the biodegradable fraction of mixed MSW, making them a smart and convenient addition to any MRF.

Trommel screens are also useful in excavation shifting. They can separate the debris into top soil to be sold to farms, nurseries and site-work, and rock that can be cleaned and used for aggregates and landscaping. This way, the contractor can resell their waste instead of having to pay for transportation and disposal of the material.

Magnets

The Tuffman series offers 24 inch, 30 inch, 36 inch, 48 inch and 60 inch sizes. All magnets are powered by a 3/4-hp, 220/480 V, 3-phase electric motor. Magnets are Ideal for recycling operations and widely used in the sorting of co-mingle and separating ferrous and nonferrous metals.

Conveyors

All Tuffman sorting stations come equipped with a infeed conveyor. Tuffman also offers the Tuffman 32′ Heavy-Duty Incline Conveyor for individual purchase or as an addition to a sorting station. The conveyor is perfect to feed the sorting material into the trommel screen or from the trommel screen to the sorting station. The Tuffman 12′ Portable Incline Conveyor is a shorter, mobile conveyor that can easily be moved from location to location making it perfect for smaller transporting jobs around the site, while the Tuffman Model 532ED Extreme Duty Conveyor is are largest, most durable conveyor. It works great for the more taxing conveying material.

Commonly, this is done through the use of an adsorption unit, such as the QuestAir (Xebec) Pressure Swing Adsorption Unit. This unit is currently set up to absorb all gasses found in biogas stream except methane, thus purifying the methane by separating it from the gas stream. The adsorbent packing in the unit will remove carbon dioxide from biogas to increase the methane purity and improve quality similar to natural gas.

The gas stream emitted from the landfill is directly routed into the adsorption unit that uses carbon beds to absorb all of the carbon in the gas stream. Once saturated, these carbon beds can either be replaced or regenerated. If the user chooses regeneration, the gas leaving the regenerating carbon bed will still contain trace amounts of the other gases from the landfill gas stream; these gases will be sent through a thermal oxidizer where the undesired gasses will be incinerated. This method is most practical at smaller landfills because of the rate at which the landfill gas would saturate the carbon beds at a large landfill would be too quick for this method to be efficient.

After the gas has been properly processed through the adsorption unit, it can be directly used to generate electricity in homes, or it can be piped offsite to nearby manufacturing plants or industrial consumers to use as an alternative fuel source such as for heating/cooling at a school, government building or other public facility. 75% of the gas generated from a landfill can be used and sold as green energy if one simply has the proper harnessing and purification equipment for the job.

The QuestAir (Xebec) Pressure Swing Adsorption Unit is a skid-mounted, high-efficiency methane purification unit complete with packing, rapid cycle valves and five no high pressure (80-450 PSIG) vessels with packing currently configured for the separation of carbon dioxide from biogas to increase the methane (CH4) content. The unit measures 34 1/2′ long x 12 1/2′ wide x 13 1/2′ high. The system uses an integrated rotary valve technology in lieu of conventional solenoid-actuated valves, increasing throughput and will process up to 4,000 cfm.

Beyond use as a landfill gas cleaning unit, this unit’s operational capabilities and purpose make it a highly sought out item in a variety of fields including oil companies, gas companies, municipalities, waste recyclers (with biogas), renewable energy companies, chemical process plants, fertilizer manufacturers and soil remediation companies wanting to purify and reuse the gas from the process. The primary use of a rotary dryer is to reduce the moisture content in a variety of materials. They are excellent for drying sawdust, wood shavings, hay, livestock renderings, by-products used for animal feed, paper, municipal solid waste, salt and sludge. Rotary dryers are a key piece of equipment in soil remediation. The rotating drum heats the soil to a temperature high enough to vaporize the contaminants, but not so high that the soil is incinerated.

With the quick and efficient drying process they provide, rotary dryers are used for a variety of applications beyond soil remediation. They are used in the food processing industry to dry grains, citrus and potato by-products, spices and nuts; in the metal and mining industries to dry a variety of metal concentrates and minerals such as aluminum, coal, limestone and fluorescent lamp powder; and in the ceramic and chemical industries to dry silica and beach sand, ceramic powders and synthetic resins.

As the material rolls back down off the flights, it passes through a stream of hot gas and falls to the bottom of the dryer. This process continues until the material is thoroughly dried. Dryers are offered in both direct and indirect heated models. When a burner is used, making up the gas stream of both air and combustion gases, it is considered direct heat. When the gas stream is heated through a different mean and no combustion gases enter the dryer, it is an indirect heated model. Indirect heated models are useful when product contamination is a concern.

Some units include a cyclone that acts as an air pollution control device, collecting and filtering the material and carrying it to the dryer’s discharge system. In this case, the material is passed from the drum into the cyclone before it is discharged. Use of a cyclone with a dryer is common when a dryer is being used for soil remediation jobs because it separates the soil from the toxins that were vaporized during the drying process. This way, the newly-cleaned soil is released, but the toxic vapors are captured and passed into an oxidizer that breaks them down and restores them to CO2 and H2O so they can be admitted into the atmosphere, pollutant-free.

This industrial shredder provides an economical solution to the problem of efficiently disposing of non-compactable waste, taking these items down to a significantly reduced volume to be more efficiently transported for recycling or disposal. The unique shredding table is made of twin shafts equipped with ripper cutters. The shafts allow abrasive material such as soil, gravel and metal fragments to fall through the cutting table without effecting performance or damaging the cutter teeth. Traditional shredders have no gap between the ripper cutters, so often times this material wears the cutters down, drastically reducing ripper blade life and production efficiency.

The shredder is operated through a fully-automated shredding process. The powerful shafts can be set to rotate at either 32 rpm or 16 rpm and automatically adjust to meet the load requirements. The two shafts operate independently of one another, allowing one to reverse while the other moves forward. As more and more knowledge comes to light on the damaging environmental effects of improperly discarding electronics, politicians and government agencies are stepping to create regulations for how the material is handled. Throwing old electronics in the trash so that they end up landfilled is a safety hazard. Most electronics contain toxic materials that can cause environmental problems if not discarded of properly. As the first step in the e-cycling process, most items are manually dismantled. Those that can’t be efficiently dismantled manually are put through a shredder, such as the Rome Mawler Stomas so that the pieces of whole e-scrap and dismantled parts are taken down to scraps less than two inches in diameter. When it comes to e-waste, recycling is extremely significant because of the valuable material that can be recovered from used electronics, reducing the need to mine into the earth for new raw materials.

The latest scrap steel report, the 2010 report, was released by the Steel Recycling Institute earlier this year, showing an 88% steel recycling rate. Around 65% of a junked car is steel, with the other 35% made up of other metals, glass, rubber and upholstery. ecycling this metal uses up around 75% less energy than making new steel. Another growing industry that calls for shredding is wood waste recycling. The limbs are inserted into the hopper and pass through the collar and through the chipping blades. The chips exit through a chute and are typically one to two inches across. Depending on the use of the wood chips, the process either stops here and the chips are used as mulch in some sort of ground cover, or they are sent through a digester for papermaking. Portec tumble grinders are used to grind bulky debris, especially wood waste, including stumps, railroad ties, branches and green waste. Prior to grinding, the wood waste is passed through a 200 square foot screening area to remove rocks, dirt, sand and other contaminants. The tumble tub is a screened cylinder inclined at a 30 degree angle. The cylinder rotates at the wood debris is passed through, knocking dirt and rocks loose and dropping them out through the screen openings, while the large wood pieces are maintained in the screen and passed into the grinder. Removing the abrasive material such as soil, gravel and metal fragments prior to grinding allows the wood waste to be efficiently shredded without effecting performance or damaging the grinding mechanisms. Traditional grinders do not have this pre-screening chamber, so often times this material wears down the grinding hammers, drastically reducing the equipment’s lifespan and production efficiency.

From the tumbler, the material is passed into the grinding chamber to be reduced to smaller shreds. The grinding tub is equipped with a hammermill with swinging hammers that do the grinding work. Hammermills are grinding machines used to shred or crush aggregate material into smaller pieces. Material is passed through a wide feed hopper, falling into the grinding chamber. The grinding chamber contains a rotating hammer rotor with swinging hammers that crush the material and drive it through a screen, thus using impact grinding to reduce the material into smaller scraps.

Portec tumble grinders are equipped with two different discharge conveyors, one for the screened product and one for the ground product. As their name implies, their primary purpose of a conveyor is to convey material from one area to another in a quick and easy manner. The use of a conveyor reduces manual labor, because the conveyor system does the moving work for you. Greenstar is a residential recycling facility with services for paper, cardboard and plastic recycling. They also provide secure document shredding as well as shredding of non-paper items such as hard drives and data disks. They strive to reduce air pollution and energy use through their recycling program. The basis of their program is backed by facts, such as the knowledge that recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than paper made from raw materials and each ton recycled saves 4000 kW of electricity. Greenstar operates under the notion that the energy saved by recycling daily household items such as paper, metal cans and plastic rather than producing new could be better spent elsewhere. Recycling these items also frees up space in landfills that can be devoted to items that are not recyclable. In fact, plastics are not biodegradable and can take up to 500 years to decompose.

Developers for the Greenstar facility required a sorting system that could accommodate eight pickers and separate ferrous from non-ferrous metals. The sorting system was purchased by Greenstar Recycling as original equipment for their newly-built facility. Currently the system allows Greenstar to handle the more than 7,000 tons they recycle every year. The sorting system served as a perfect launch-pad to get Greenstar established in the market and they only plan to grow and develop from here, anticipating further Tuffman equipment needs within the year.

This sorting system purchase included an 8-Man Sorting Station, a 32’ long x 42” wide Infeed Conveyor, a CBS 48 Crossbelt Magnet, and a 10’ long x 36” wide UHWM Lined Chute. As with all Tuffman products, this system was fully developed new in-house and was custom made to meet the customer’s application needs. This entire system was fully designed and manufactured at our facility and comes with a one-year warranty on all products.
