Grinders are used to reduce material down to a specified size. One growing industry that requires constant use of a grinder is wood waste recycling. Dryers are offered in both direct and indirect heated models. When a burner is used, making up the gas stream of both air and combustion gases, it is considered direct heat. When the gas stream is heated through a different mean and no combustion gases enter the dryer, it is an indirect heated model. Indirect heated models are useful when product contamination is a concern.

One rising application that calls for the use of a rotary dryer is in sludge drying. An example of this type of municipal and industrial sludge drying plant is the new Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Corona, California. WWTPs considerably decrease wet cake hauling costs and help sites meet U.S. EPA standards. The heat exhaust recovered in these plants can also be used to produce electricity. The Corona WWTP has reduced the amount of wet cake handling by 80% and eliminated odors.

The sludge at a WWTP is fed into a dryer through some form of infeed system. As the dryer rotates, the material is lifted by a series of fins called flights that line the inner walls of the drum. As the sludge rolls back down off the flights, it passes through a stream of hot gas and falls to the bottom of the dryer. This process continues until it is thoroughly dried. At the end of the drying process, the newly-dried material is released through a discharge auger and the toxic vapors are captured and passed into an oxidizer that breaks them down and restores them to CO2 and H2O so they can be admitted into the atmosphere, pollutant-free.

Grinders use abrasion and compression to pulverize materials to a reduced size, using a series of wheels, drums and plates to process the material. Grinding and shredding materials in preparation for recycling is growing in profitability. Getting a wide variety of sized and shaped material down to a consistent and more manageable size is the first step in recycling that product. And, with many states passing ordinances on the proper way to dispose of waste and regulations on what can and cannot dumped in a landfill, the shredding and grinding industries are more profitable than ever.
