Tuffman Crossbelt magnets are ideal for recycling operations and are widely used for sorting co-mingled metals and separating ferrous and nonferrous metals. Often times they are suspended over the conveyor belt of a sorting station in order to pick out the ferrous metal. Because it is difficult to tell ferrous from non-ferrous metal just by looking at it, use of a crossbelt magnet ensures that only non-ferrous metal is picked. Ferrous scrap metal includes iron and steel recovered from autos, farm equipment, household appliances, structural steel, etc, and non-ferrous scrap is all metals other than iron and steel, such as aluminum, copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Non-ferrous scrap metal represents a smaller percentage of scrap metal, but has a higher market value.
As the economy stabilizes, scrap metal demand and prices continue to rise. Scrap metal recyclers overall have seen a spike in revenue in the past year. If this trend stays on track, the United States can expect to experience a growth in the scrap market industry as more and more scrap metal processors and recyclers step into this profitable field. The 2010 scrap steel report, the most recent report published by the Steel Recycling Institute showed an 88% steel recycling rate, indicating that scrap demand and steel production is getting back into balance compared to previous years. More steel was produced than scrap collected making steel a commodity high in demand and causing an increase in scrap steel buying prices. More than 86 million net tons of steel were produced while consuming almost 76 million tons of scrap. Demand for copper scrap has also experienced an increase.
